New Zealand started their campaign with match 3 against Sri Lanka at Cardiff. Sri Lanka with relatively inexperienced batting line-up bowled out at 136. New Zealand finished off the match with 10 wickets and 203 balls to spare. On the green pitch, New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first. Watch the key moments of the match 3.

Sri Lanka started off poorly with opener Lahiru Thirimanne struck plumb in front of the wicket in the second ball of the innings. The batsmen of Sri Lanka had no answer of New Zealand’s swing and pace bowling. Only three batsmen were able to cross the double-digit mark.

Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne became only the second player in the World Cup to carry the bat. First was West Indies wicket-keeper batsman Ridley Jacobs who carried his bat against Australia at Manchester in World Cup 1999. He scored 49 not out in that innings. Karunaratne scored unbeaten 52 in this match.

 

2. New Zealand Bowling

New Zealand bowlers bowled well. All the bowlers took wickets with Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry have taken 3 wickets each. Matt Henry all three wickets were of top-order batsmen. Sri Lanka never recovered from their early loss and bowled out at 136.

New Zealand started off with flyer with both the openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro scored half-centuries.

Martin Guptill scored 73 runs in 51 deliveries with 2 sixes and Colin Munro made 58 runs in 47 balls. Both remain unbeaten and New Zealand won the match easily for Blackcaps by 10 wickets.

 

4. Matt Henry – Player Of The Match

Matt Henry received the player of the match award for his bowling spell of 7 overs 29 runs and 3 wickets. This huge win will definitely help Kiwis in the latter half of the tournament.

Yesterday, during the first Match 2 of the World Cup, West Indies defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets. New Zealand will play their next match against Bangladesh at the Oval on 5th June, while Sri Lanka will play their next against Afghanistan at Cardiff on 4th June.
