1. Sushma Sharma To Sushma Swaraj
Sushma Sharma was born on February 14th, 1952, at Ambala Cantt, Haryana. She was born to Hardev Sharma and Shrimati Laxmi Devi. During the Emergency, she married Swaraj Kaushal on 13 July 1973.
2. Education
She did her education at Sanatan Dharma College in Ambala Cantonment and got a bachelor’s degree with majors in Sanskrit and Political Science. She also studied law at Punjab University, Chandigarh.
3. Child Prodigy
Sushma Swaraj received the best Cadet of N.C.C at S.D. College, Ambala Cantt for three years in a row.
4. Rise Of Political Career
She joined Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in the early 1970s. This is how she began her political journey. Her father was also a prominent Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh member. She was also a member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly from 1977 to 1982, acquiring the Ambala Cantonment assembly seat at the age of 25.
5. Practice Law
Sushma Swaraj started practice as an advocate in the Supreme Court of India in 1973. The Emergency movement brought together Swaraj Kaushal and Sushma Swaraj. They teamed up for the defense of the George Fernandes Legal Defense team in the Baroda Dynamite case (1975-77).
6. Youngest Ever Cabinet Minister
Sushma Swaraj became the youngest cabinet minister in 1977, at the age of 25, in the Janata Party Government. She was headed by then Chief Minister Devi Lal. Sushma Swaraj also became State President of the Janata Party, Haryana State, in 1979, at the age of 27.
7. First Female Spokesperson
Sushma Swaraj is the first female Spokesperson of a national political party in India. She is also the first female BJPs Chief Minister, General Secretary, Leader of Opposition, Union Cabinet Minister, Spokesperson, and Minister of External Affairs.
8. First Female Chief Minister Of Delhi
Sushma Swaraj served as the first female Chief Minister of Delhi in 1998. But her duration was short, from 13 October 1998 – 3 December 1998.
9. Outstanding Parliamentarian Award
Sushma Swaraj is the first and only female member of Parliament to date to be honored with the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in 2004. She has been elected seven times as a member of the Parliament and three times as a Member of the Legislative Assembly.
10. Bellary Lok Sabha Constituency
In Lok Sabha Elections 1999, Sushma Swaraj stood against Soniya Gandhi. Sushma Swaraj received 3,58,550 votes, while Sonia Gandhi received 4,14,650. She lost to Sonia Gandhi by a margin of 7%. Sushma Swaraj did 12 days of her campaign for Bellary Constituency in Karnataka.
11. Second Woman To Be Minister Of External Affairs
After Indira Gandhi, she was the second woman to be Minister of External Affairs. She was the cabinet minister in Narendra Modi Government from May 26, 2014, to May 30, 2019.
12. Six AIIMS
She opened up 6 All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, and Rishikesh during her tenure as Union Health Minister from January 2003 to May 2004.
13. Mother Of A Barrister Daughter
Her daughter Bansuri Swaraj is a graduate of Oxford University and a Barrister at Law from Inner Temple.
