The entire nation was awake, watching television to see the landing of lander Vikram of Chandrayaan-2 mission. But unfortunately, just before 2.1 km from the moon’s surface, the connection from the lander Vikram was lost. But the mission is more than 95% successful, while we are waiting for the establishment of the connection with lander Vikram for the remaining success of the mission.
This Chandrayaan-2 is one of the most historic space mission of India. The budget for this mission is INR 978 crores which are extremely cost-effective. The entire budget of the Indian Space Research organization is quite effective as NASA spend more money in a year. According to the Bangalore Mirror, there are 16500 people were involved in the mission. To your surprise 30% of them were women. The hard work and dedication put by our scientists working day and night to make this happened are remarkable. Let us meet, few of the scientists involved in this mission which makes every Indian proud.
1. M. Annadurai: Director Of The U R Rao Satellite Center In Bengaluru
M. Annadurai is Vice President for Science and Technology for Tamil Nadu State Council. He was also the spearhead for Chandrayaan-1. M. Annadurai was the first project director of Chandrayaan-2. He later convinced M. Vanitha to lead the mission Chandrayaan-2 upon his retirement because of her skills as System engineer.
2. M. Vanitha: First Woman Project Director At ISRO
M. Vanitha was the first-ever woman Project Director at ISRO. As per The Hindu, she is a data ace specialist from U.R. Rao Satellite Centre. M Vanitha has more than 20+ years of experience and she was also the part of various teams of Cartosat-1, Oceansat-2 and Megha-Tropiques teams. She was also awarded the Best Female Scientist in 2006 by the Astronomical Society of India.
3. Ritu Karidhal: Mission Director
Ritu Karidhal is also known as Rocket Woman Of India. In the year 2013, she was the Deputy Director of Operations for the Mangalyaan (Mars Orbiter Mission, M.O.M). She is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Science with a Masters in Aeronautical engineering. In the year 2007, Ritu Karidhal also received ‘ISRO Young Scientist Award’ from A.P.J Abdul Kalam.
4. Dr. Kailasavadivoo Sivan – ISRO Chairman
Dr. Kailasavadivoo Sivan is also known as The Rocket Man. The chairman of ISRO Dr. K. Sivan was also offered the position in NASA, but he refused to work there and decided to work for ISRO. He was not handling Chandrayaan-2 on day to day basis. Dr. Sivan was supervising the complete operations and providing his knowledge and suggestions whenever needed. Son of a farmer, Dr. Kailasavadivoo Sivan is the only graduate from his family. He is also known for the efforts he put in to develop cryogenic engines. As per India Today, he came up with the day of launch wind biasing strategy. This helps in launching the rockets in unfavorable weather conditions.
There are many more people whose contribution cannot be forgotten. As per NDTV, there are many more people in the core team, which includes, Mechanical Engineer Dr. S. Somanath, Dr. V. Narayanan, the Head of the Cryogenic Engine Facility, Mission Director J. Jayaprakash, Vehicle Director Raghunatha Pillai, Deputy Project Directors C. Kumar, and Amitabh Singh
