Our world is a big place, full of cultural norms and standards that most people follow. While some of these conventions may be understandable and adhered to, others are becoming increasingly obsolete since they undermine basic ideals of equality for all. Even as we progress toward a more gender-equal world, there are still areas around the globe that remain off-limits to women. For example, women are not allowed to enter Sabarimala just because it is a Hindu temple. Here are a few of these locations from throughout the world.

1. Haji Ali Dargah, India

The Haji Ali Dargah, one of Mumbai‘s most prominent monuments, has been closed to women because it is considered a ‘grievous sin’ in Islam for a woman to be in close proximity to the grave of a Muslim saint.

The current setup at the dargah permits them to enter, but they are not permitted to enter the inner sanctum sanctorum. Since its implementation in 2015, this prohibition has sparked dozens of protests, plus many petitions calling for the judgment to be overturned.

2. Lord Kartikeya Temple, India

In a two-thirds majority vote, the East Lothian Club decided against allowing female members this year, with 64 percent voting in favor and 36 percent voting against.

They elected to uphold the vote, despite the decision resulting in them being barred from hosting any future Open Championships by the sport’s governing body.

Women have been forbidden from entering this site for over 1000 years. As a result, Mount Athos, home to Orthodox churches, only accepts 100 Orthodox and 10 non-Orthodox male pilgrims. Mount Athos, a magnificent place, adheres to this ancient tradition religiously to this day.
