A day is not far when you will be able to view videos, cricket, movies, and other multimedia stuff straight on your mobile phone even if you do not have access to the internet. This will be accomplished via D2M (Direct-to-Mobile) broadcasting technology. Let us know what this D2M technology is in this circumstance. After all, how will the video be aired on a mobile device without access to the internet? What impact will this D2M technology have on the whole mobile industry?

What Is Direct-To-Mobile Broadcasting?

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Prasar Bharati, India’s public service broadcaster, are testing the feasibility of a technology that allows video and other types of multimedia material to be transmitted directly to mobile phones without the need for an active internet connection.

The method, known as “direct-to-mobile” (D2M) broadcasting, promises to boost internet consumption and spectrum use.

Mobile phones may receive terrestrial digital TV using this technology, based on the convergence of the internet and broadcast. It would work in the same way that people listen to FM radio on their phones, with a receiver built into the phone that can tap into radio frequencies. Multimedia content may also be immediately beamed to phones via D2M.

The technology’s concept is that it might be used to directly broadcast content relating to citizen-centric information, as well as to counter fake news, issue emergency warnings, and provide disaster management help, among other things. It may also broadcast live news, sports, and other content to mobile phones. More importantly, the content should stream without any buffering and consume no internet traffic.

Live news, sports, and OTT material may be broadcast straight on a mobile phone without the need for an internet connection thanks to D2M technology. The unique feature is that videos and other multimedia content aired directly on the phone will be transmitted in high-definition without buffering because no internet bandwidth is used.

The most significant benefit of this D2M technology is that any precise information about residents may be sent straight to their mobile phones. It will aid in the prevention of fake news, the distribution of emergency warnings, and disaster management.

Impact On Consumers And Businesses

Consumers would benefit from this D2M technology because they would be able to access multimedia material via Video on Demand (VoD) or Over The Top (OTT) content providers without using up all of their mobile data and at a low cost. People in remote locations with little or no internet connectivity will be able to consume video material thanks to this technology.

One of the major advantages of the technology for companies is that it allows telecom service providers to transfer video traffic from their mobile network to the broadcast network, allowing them to free up valuable mobile spectrum. This will also optimize the use of mobile airwaves and free up bandwidth, reducing call dropouts and increasing internet speeds, among other things.

Efforts Were Undertaken By The Government To Facilitate D2M Technology

On Wednesday, DoT Secretary K Rajaraman announced the formation of a team to investigate the viability of a spectrum band for providing broadcast services directly to customers’ cell phones. “The 526-582 MHz band is designed to function in tandem with both mobile and broadcast services. “The Department of Transportation has formed a committee to investigate this band,” he stated. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is currently using this frequency for TV transmitters around the country.

Last year, Prasar Bharati, a public service broadcaster, formed a partnership with IIT Kanpur to explore the technology’s practicality.

Challenges

While the D2M technology is still in its early stages, Prasar Bharati’s CEO has stated that bringing major players such as mobile carriers on board will be the “greatest difficulty” in implementing D2M on a large scale. According to Apurva Chandra, Secretary of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, a broad rollout of the technology will necessitate infrastructural upgrades as well as legislative reforms.

No buffering, no internet consumption, it certainly looks to bring revolution. Are you guys excited about D2M technology? Let us know in the comments below.
