On Sunday, Praveen Sood, an IPS officer from the 1986 batch who is currently the DGP of Karnataka, was named the next director of the CBI for a two-year term. When Subodh Jaiswal’s term as CBI Director expires on May 25, Sood will take over.
In a meeting of a high-powered committee that included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, and Leader of the Opposition Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Praveen Sood’s name was finally decided upon.
The Altercation Between DK Shivakumar And CBI Director Praveen Sood
When Praveen Sood served as the DGP of Karnataka, the state Congress leader DK Shivakumar once called him “Nalayak,” which is Hindi for inept or useless. In addition, DK Shivakumar pledged to take measures against him.
On March 14, 2023, DK Shivakumar, the president of the Karnataka Congress, referred to Praveen Sood, the state’s director general and inspector general of police, as “Nalayak” and accused him of having ties to the BJP, which was in the position of power in the state at the time. DK Shivakumar added that Congress would take severe action against senior officer Praveen Sood if they were to win the state’s next election.
Remarks Against Each Other
At the time, DK Shivakumar had stated,
“This DGP is a ‘Nalayak.’ Let our government come. We will take action against him. Congress had also written to ECI to remove him. I thought he (Praveen Sood) was a respected man. Immediately, a case should be registered against him, and he should be arrested.”
DK Shivakumar also declared,
“He has finished three years in service. How many days do you want to keep and worship him? He has been filing cases only against Congress. He has registered more than 25 cases against us and not a single case against BJP leaders. Let our government come. We will take action against him.”
DK Shivakumar made these comments as he criticized the Karnataka police for having several charges against Congress politicians but none at all against BJP leaders.
When Congress is about to establish the government in Karnataka, with DK Shivakumar expected to play a significant part in the new administration, Praveen Sood will take over the CBI.
