Devi Ahilyabai Holkar married Khanderao, the son of Malhar Rao Holkar, the ruler of Indore, when she was just eight years old. This union occurred due to a chance meeting between Ahilyabai and Malhar Rao. However, tragedy struck in 1754 when Khanderao was killed in the Battle of Rajasthan.

The events that ensued culminated in the epic Battle of Panipat in 1761. The death of Malhar Rao Holkar, the ruler of Indore, in 1765 added to the turmoil. Following that, Khanderao’s son gained the crown but died in 1767, leaving Ahilyabai as regent of Indore for a brief period.

In 1767, Ahilyabai Holkar became the queen of Indore, assuming complete control and becoming the reigning ruler. Her ascension signaled the start of her illustrious reign, characterized by effective administration, infrastructural development, religious patronage, and social welfare measures.
