In a tragic incident, a boat carrying 32 people, including school children, capsized in the Bagmati River in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur on Thursday. What Happened in Bagmati River?

According to the latest updates, 20 children have been rescued, while 10 are still missing and feared dead. The search and rescue operations led by the National Disaster Response Force [NDRF] are still underway to locate the missing children. The incident took place near Madhupur Patti ghat along the Bagmati River.
Allegedly, the incident took place between 10:30 AM and 11:00 AM today. However, the NDRF and SDRF have been rushed to the accident site. In a viral video, four men can be seen on an inflatable NDRF raft. With an oxygen tank on his back, one man jumps into the river to continue searching for people.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has assured all possible help to the families of the victims and directed the local administration to carry out the rescue operations on a war footing. Furthermore, he stated,
“Rescue operation is underway… I have asked the District Magistrate concerned to look into the matter urgently.y The state government will provide all assistance to the affected families.” He even told the reporters that the senior officers, including the District Magistrate, had been directed to the scene. Further, he added, aid and support will be given to the children’s families.
“There is information of 10 persons missing, 15-20 people rescued so far. Search operation underway,” said Ajay Kumar, Disaster Management officer.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for better safety measures and infrastructure in the water transport system in Bihar. The state has witnessed several such incidents in the past. And the government needs to take urgent steps to prevent such tragedies in the future.
