If you like VIP, fancy, or choice vehicle registration numbers, be ready to pay much more. The Maharashtra government announces a price hike for these popular numbers. The new rates are effective from August 30, 2024. It will apply to both personal and commercial vehicles. There will be different charges applied to two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and other types of vehicles.

The cost of the ‘0001’ registration number will rise to Rs 6 lakh for four-wheelers in high-demand areas like Mumbai and Pune. For out-of-series VIP numbers, in major cities, the prices can go up to Rs 18 lakh. This new price is almost the same as buying some mid-range cars. This shows how popular and exclusive these numbers have become.

According to the transport department’s notification on August 30, 2024, the ‘0001’ number fee for four-wheelers will go up to Rs 5 lakh from the previous Rs 3 lakh. For two and three-wheelers, the fee will double from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh. In high-demand areas like Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, Pune, Thane, Raigad, Aurangabad, Nashik, and Kolhapur, the fee for the ‘0001’ number will be Rs 6 lakh. Up from Rs. 4 lakhs.

The ‘3-Time Basic Fee’ Structure

The new policy of the transport department involves a “three-time base fare” system. If, for example, the ‘0001’ number sticker is not available from this series, it must instead be obtained from someone outside. It can lead to automotive license fees on 4-wheelers of Rs 15 lakhs along with 3 lakhs in penalties for 2-wheelers and another 3 lakhs fine paid by idlers and 3-wheel drivers who want such valued markers.

Many of these wealthy people, top businessmen, politicians, and famous people adopt VIP numbers for their luxury cars. Since 2005, the government of Beijing has also issued a decree providing that VIP number plates may be passed on to family members, including spouses and children, which is different from the previous regulation banning such transfers.

240 VIP Numbers Identified With New Fee Structure

The fee revision follows a draft notification issued on September 16, 2022, and is the first update since April 20, 2013. The state government has identified 240 VIP vehicle registration numbers in each registration series. Notable numbers like 0009, 0099, 0999, 9999, and 0786 now cost Rs 2.5 lakh for four-wheelers (up from Rs 1.5 lakh) and Rs 50,000 for two- and three-wheelers (up from Rs 20,000). The fee for 16 popular numbers is Rs 1 lakh for four-wheelers and Rs 25,000 for two-wheelers.

Adding to it, fees for 49 other numbers have been increased to Rs 70,000 from Rs 50,000 for four-wheelers and Rs 15,000 for two and three-wheelers. VIP numbers will not be reserved for government vehicles, but special orders may exempt them from registration fee payment.

A retired official of the transport department said, “The fee hike is expected to generate additional revenue for the state transport department, which earned Rs 139.20 crore from vehicle registration number issuances in 1,83,794 cases during the 2017-18 financial year.”
