A disagreement has emerged between French President Emmanuel Macron and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over France’s position on the ongoing situation in Gaza. The dispute started when Macron called for stopping the shipment of weapons in Gaza, which upsets Netanyahu, who called the suggestion disgraceful.
Benjamin Netanyahu Criticizes France
Prime Minister Netanyahu condemned the situation, calling it a disgrace in a video message on Saturday. He said,
“The axis of terror stands together, but countries that supposedly oppose this terror axis call for an arms embargo on Israel.”
Prime Minister Netanyahu continued,
“As Israel fights the forces of barbarism led by Iran, all civilized countries should be standing firmly by Israel’s side. Yet President Macron and some other Western leaders are now calling for an arms embargo against Israel. Shame on them. Is Iran imposing an arms embargo on Hezbollah, the Houthis, on Hamas, and on its other proxies? Of course not. The axis of terror stands together, but countries that supposedly oppose this terror axis call for an arms embargo on Israel. What a disgrace.”
Emmanuel Macron’s Response To Netanyahu’s Criticism
In response to Netanyahu’s criticism, Macron’s office, known as the Elysee, wanted to clarify that France remains a strong friend of Israel. They also pointed out that France has shown support towards Israeli security in many ways. For instance, France sent its military to help and protect Israel when Iran launched its missile attacks, both recently and back in April. Macron even personally told Iran’s president that France would stand against any attacks on Israel.
However, during further discussion, Macron’s office explained that they were also worried about rising tensions in the Middle East. They believe it is important to stop the fights in Gaza. Hence, the decision was taken to prevent the shipment of weapons. With the harsh reaction to this event, Netanyahu said it has now come too far, and it didn’t reflect the true friendship between France and Israel.
Macron shared a message on X where he said that stopping the fight is crucial, not just in Gaza but also in Lebanon. He further said it is necessary to protect the ordinary people in trouble in this conflict. Hence, a peaceful solution is much needed.
“An immediate ceasefire is essential in Gaza as in Lebanon. We must avoid the escalation of tensions, protect civilian population, free the hostages, and find political solutions necessary for the security of Israel and all.”
The French government’s main message is that they can both be friends with Israel and work towards peace in the region.
