On Sunday, Arvind Kejriwal surprised everyone with his announcement. He announced that he had decided to resign as the Chief Minister of Delhi within 48 hours. There is speculation spreading about who would take up his position. The announcement was made just after the day he was granted bail in the excise policy case.
His bail was under several conditions, such as that he wasn’t supposed to enter the Chief Minister’s office or was not allowed to sign any official documents. He is only allowed to do so if necessary. He said,
“The elections are supposed to be held in February. I demand elections be held in November with Maharashtra elections. Till elections are held, someone else from the party will be the Chief Minister.”
Arvind Kejriwal expressed that he would want to return to office only when he declared himself honest in the eyes of the people. After this announcement, questions about who would take up the position for the upcoming four months were raised.
Candidates Who Could Be Next Chief Minister Of Delhi
From Raghav Chadha to Atishi, these are the candidates for the next Chief Minister of Delhi after Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation.
1. Raghav Chadha
Raghav is a member of AAP’s national executive and political affairs committee. He is one of the top faces of the part. He represents the part as Rajya Sabha MP. Before joining AAP, he worked as a professional chartered accountant (CA). This 35-year-old man is known for being a young politician in the country. Taking credit for the party’s success in Punjab, on 18 September 2022, Chadha was appointed as co-in-charge for the 2022 Gujrat Assembly elections. He is the voice of AAP, consistently addressing key issues in Parliament.
2. Gopal Rai
Gopal is a seasoned leader in the party who holds a long-lasting role. He is known for his experience and honesty with AAP since its establishment. He is considered to be a capable option for the party. If he is appointed as the CM, it could lead to the right choice for the state.
3. Saurabh Bharadwaj
Saurabh is a national spokesperson of the AAP. He was declared a minister after Mr. Sisodia was arrested in the liquor policy case. Saurabh owns portfolios such as vigilance and health in the government of Arvind Kejriwal. He worked as a software engineer before entering this field. After Kejriwal’s announcement, Saurabh said,
“In the whole world, he might be the only CM who has asked people to vote for him only if he is honest, otherwise not to vote for him, that too after resigning from his post. That person is taking such a big risk to his whole career.”
4. Sanjay Singh
Since 2018, Sanjay is a Rajya Sabha MP. He is one of the most-known faces of AAP. He is known for strong speeches in Parliament. Sanjay is always seen in media interactions to put up the key issues. This 52-year-old is a member of its national executive and political affairs committee. He was also arrested in the Delhi liquor policy case. Currently, he is out on bail, just like Mr Arvind Kejriwal and Mr. Manish Sisodia.
5. Kailash Gahlot
Kailash Gahlot is a professional lawyer. He owns key portfolios such as transport, home affairs, and finance. The 50-year-old leader is counted under senior members of AAP. He has been MLA from Najafgarh constituency since 2015. He is an advocate and has practiced in both the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court. Between 2005 and 2007, he served as a member executive in the High Court Bar Association.
6. Atishi
Atishi is praised for her role in Delhi’s famed education reforms. She pursued her education in Delhi. After her graduation in history, she went to Oxford University for further studies. Atishi dropped her surname and became associated with the AAP in 2013. She is an MLA from Kalkaji. At 43, she became a Minister after Mr. Sisodia was arrested in a corruption case that was linked to liquor policy. On August 15, Kejriwal chose her to hoist the tricolor in the event.
