Ten states have submitted recommendations to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation to rename twenty-two airports located in various locations throughout the nation. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol stated the ministry received proposals for renaming 22 airports from ten state governments in a written response to the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
In response, Mohol stated that although airports are usually referred to by the name of the city in which they are situated, the Center is required to take into account any specific names that a state government suggests and that resolution is subsequently approved by the relevant state Assembly.
The States’ Suggestions For Renaming Airports
- Three airports in Andhra Pradesh will be renamed, with Tirupati Airport becoming “Sri Venkateswara Airport.”
- Bihar: “Vidyapati Airport” will replace Darbhanga Airport.
- Haryana: One airport.
- Karnataka: Four.
- Madhya Pradesh: One airport.
- Maharashtra: Five airports, including renaming the Shirdi Airport to ‘Shree Sai Baba International Airport’.
- Manipur: One airport.
- Punjab: One airport.
- Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand: Four and one airports, respectively.
Minister Explains The Process For Changing Name
“If a specific name is proposed by the respective state government, supported by a resolution passed in the state legislative assembly, which is then considered in consultation with other ministries/departments and then sent to the Union Cabinet for final approval,” the Minister stated.
