Caryn Marjorie, a Snapchat Star, used OpenAI’s GPT technology to create CarynAI. It is an AI avatar that offers virtual companionship for one dollar per minute. This is not an entirely original concept in the AI world. However, it demonstrates how the lines between reality and virtual reality in the AI world are becoming increasingly blurred.
To cure loneliness, the renowned Snapchat influencer with 1.8 million followers has launched a voice-based chatbot powered by AI technology. The chatbot is described as a “virtual girlfriend” on its website. According to the chatbot’s website, Marjorie’s followers can participate in unique, personalized talks with an AI version of the influencer. As a result, Marjorie changed her Twitter bio and now calls herself ‘The first influencer transformed into AI.”
Caryn Marjorie On Creating The Chatbot
On Thursday, Caryn Marjorie wrote a tweet,
“CarynAI is the first step in the right direction to cure loneliness. Men are told to suppress their emotions, hide their masculinity, and to not talk about issues they are having. I vow to fix this with CarynAI. I have worked with the world’s leading psychologists to seamlessly add [cognitive behavioral therapy] and [dialectic behavior therapy] within chats. This will help undo trauma, rebuild physical and emotional confidence, and rebuild what has been taken away by the pandemic.”
The CarynAI website claims the development team spent over 2,000 hours creating and implementing the chatbot to give an “immersive AI experience.”
In a recent tweet, John Meyer, CEO of Forever Voices, expressed delight in his team’s efforts and commended their collaboration with Marjorie, calling it “an incredible step forward in the future of AI-to-Human interaction!”
Profit Made By The AI So Far
According to Fortune, after a week of beta testing the “virtual girlfriend,” CarynAI reportedly produced $71,610 in income. The chatbot presently has over 1,000 users and costs fans $1 per minute for personalized chats.
Response From The Audience
Caryn Marjorie is achieving the dreams of innumerable followers who want to be in a relationship with her by harnessing the possibilities of AI technology. She’s making some serious cash too.
The bot has gone viral, causing Marjorie to make headlines, spark criticism, and even receive death threats. The bot has also sparked a debate about the ethics of companion chatbots.
To conclude, CarynAI’s claims to potentially “cure loneliness” are not backed up by sufficient psychological or sociological research.
Irina Raicu, director of internet ethics at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, said, “This kind of grand claims about a product’s goodness can just mask the desire to monetize further the fact that people want to pretend to have a relationship with an influencer.”
According to her, these chatbots might add “a second layer of unreality” to parasocial relationships between influencers and admirers.
