9. Rhodesia To Zimbabwe
Rhodesia was a colonial name. Between 1953 and 1963, Southern Rhodesia was joined with Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The country achieved international recognition after its independence in April 1980 as the Republic of Zimbabwe and was renamed Zimbabwe.
10. Cape Verde To The Republic Of Cabo Verde
In 2013, Cabo Verde changed to the Republic of Cabo Verde or simply Cabo Verde. It was an island discovered by the Portuguese sailors in 1444.
11. Congo Free State To Zaire To The Democratic Republic of Congo
Starting from the 1800s to the 199, this country has a history of name changes. Until 1908, the country was known as the Congo Free State. It became Belgian Congo, followed by the Republic of Congo in 1960, then the Republic of Zaire in 1971, and finally in 1997, the name was changed to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
12. Alto Volta To Burkina Faso
The Republic of Alto Volta was renamed Burkina Faso on the twentieth anniversary of its independence in 1984. It”s meaning in the local language is “land of whole men.” The country has also changed its flag and National anthem. The old name was referred to as one of the main rivers in the region.
13. German Southwest Africa To Namibia
German Southwest Africa changed to Namibia in 1990. It became independent from Germany. Its cities and regions were also changed later. However, the locals did not like it as they were used to with the old names.
