Diwali 2024: October 31 Or November 1? Get The Complete Festival Schedule And City-Wise Timings

Diwali is celebrated across India. A festival of lights is celebrated for 5 days. It starts from Dhanteras and ends on Bhai Dooj. But this time there is some uncertainty with the dates. People are still wondering when exactly they need to celebrate Diwali 2024. The festival of lights could be on October 31 or November 1, depending on regional traditions.

In Maharashtra, Diwali starts earlier on Govatsa Dwadashi, whereas in Gujarat it begins 2 days prior on Agyaras. People are more worried about the Lakshmi Pooja. Lakshmi Pooja is celebrated when the Amavasya of the Kartik month appears. This year the Tithi of Amavasya will start at 3:52 PM on October 31 and end at 6:16 PM on November 1. Hence, in most of regions, Diwali will be celebrated on 31 October. Whereas there are chances that many people will celebrate it on November 1 following their traditions and customs.

As Amavasya Tithi falls on October 31 and November 1, there was confusion about when exactly to celebrate Diwali in 2024. Finally, the confusion was settled by ‘Deepawali Nirnay Dharmsabha’, in a gathering with 100 astrologers and religious scholars at Central Sanskrit University in Jaipur. After the discussion, they concluded that the most preferable day to celebrate Diwali is October 31. The day is good for Lakshmi Poojan as well. Hence, Diwali should be celebrated on October 31.

The experts also said that Pardosh Kaal, the auspicious period after sunset, is crucial for Lakshmi Poojan and this year it falls on October 31 from 5:12 pm to 7:43 pm. The timing of October 31 becomes an ideal choice for the rituals. The Pradosh Kaal this year will end in quite a short time, this reduces the ideal time of Lakshmi Pooja.

Why Is Diwali Celebrated?

Diwali is known as the Festival of Lights. It is a triumph of good over evil and marks the return of Lord Rama, Maa Sita, and Lakshman to Ayodhya after their 14-year exile to celebrate the victory over Ravana. On this special occasion, Hindu devotees perform a special pooja of Maa Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh for wealth and prosperity.
