As the final phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections wraps up, the exit polls are out and declaring NDA as a clear winner. These polls figured out the political landscape before the official results to be out on June 4. Let’s take a trip down through the past to perceive how accurate these expectations were in 2014 and 2019.
2014: NDA’s Startling Unexpected Landslide
The 2014 exit polls mostly predicted a win for the BJP-led NDA but underestimated the size of their victory. The significant polls forecasted were:
- India Today-Cicero: 272 seats
- News 24-Chanakya: 340 seats
- CNN-IBN-CSDS: 280 seats
- Times Now ORG: 249 seats
- ABP News-Nielsen: 274 seats
- NDTV-Hansa Research: 279 seats
For the UPA, the predictions were:
- India Today-Cicero: 115 seats
- News 24-Chanakya: 101 seats
- CNN-IBN-CSDS: 97 seats
- Times Now ORG: 148 seats
- ABP News-Nielsen: 97 seats
- NDTV-Hansa Research: 103 seats
The actual results were a shocker. The NDA got 336 seats, with the BJP alone securing 282. The UPA, then again, oversaw only 60 seats, with Congress winning a simple 44.
2019: A Closer Call
Fast forward to 2019, the exit polls were more aligned up with the final result yet fell short in some areas. Predictions for the NDA were:
- India Today-Axis: 339-365 seats
- News 24-Today’s Chanakya: 350 seats
- News18-IPSOS: 336 seats
- Times Now VMR: 306 seats
- India TV -CNX: 300 seats
- Sudarshan News: 305 seats
And for the UPA:
- India Today-Axis: 77-108 seats
- News 24-Today’s Chanakya: 95 seats
- News18-IPSOS: 82 seats
- Times Now VMR: 132 seats
- India TV CNX: 120 seats
- Sudarshan News: 124 seats
The actual numbers revealed the NDA with 352 seats and the BJP winning 303. The UPA garnered 91 seats, with Congress taking 52.
Exit Polls 2024 Lok Sabha Elections
In 2024, the stakes are higher. The BJP aims for nothing less than a “400 paar” seat target under PM Narendra Modi’s leadership. With the BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led INDIA bloc in a head-to-head battle, the exit polls gave the numbers in favor of NDA, with BJP itself coming up as a majority. All the exit polls are giving numbers in NDA’s favor. Will the outcome on June 4 be the same or the results will be opposite form Exit Polls?
