The dreams are shattered. Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from her final gold medal wrestling match in the 50 kg category at the Paris Olympics. She was found to be 100 gm overweight on the day of the final. This is heartbreaking for the entire nation.

 

Vinesh Phogat Disqualified From The Paris Olympics

Vinesh Phogat was about to fight for the Gold Medal in the Women’s 50 kg final match against USA’s Sarah Ann Hilderbrandt. However, she has been disqualified by the event organizers for being 100 gm overweight. Indian Olympics Association has released an official statement,

“It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand.”

 

PM Narendra Modi Reacts On Vinesh Phogat’s Disqualification

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken to ‘X’ has praised Vinesh Phogat. He also talked to IOA President PT Usha. He also seeks firsthand information on the matter and potential avenues for redressal. PM Modi even instructed PT Usha to explore all the options to support Vinesh Phogat’s case. He also added to file a strong protest against disqualification if necessary.

 

Vinesh Phogat Defeated Defending Champion Yui Susaki

Vinesh Phogat was eligible to compete on Day 1. As per the rules, a wrestler must meet the weight limit on both days. Vinesh was found overweight on the day of the finale and she will be not eligible for the Silver medal either. Vinesh began her tournament by defeating the 82 matches undefeated and defending champion Yui Susaki. Yui Susaki never lost a bout in her international career and is a four-time world champion. After this, she defeated Ukraine’s Oksana Livach to qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, she defeated Cuba Yusneylis Guzman Lopez to qualify for the finals. She became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the Olympic finals. However, now she is disqualified and Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba will play the Gold Medal match against USA’s Sarah Ann Hilderbrandt.
