After Belgium secured the third position in the FIFA World Cup 2018, the final match of the league was held between France and Croatia. The finals was held at Luzhniki Stadium. France and Croatia have faced each other five times previously with France winning three out of five. The other two ended as draws. This was their sixth encounter. Croatia was off for a bad start as Mario Mandzukic scored an own goal at the 18th minute giving France the lead in the early stages of the match. This made him the first player in history to score an own goal in the World Cup finals. But they soon leveled out when Ivan Perisic scored a goal at the 28th minute leveling the score. The score was now 1 – 1. However, France steered towards the lead again when Antoine Greizmann scored a penalty goal at the 38th minute. At halftime, the score was 2 – 1 with France in the lead.

Paul Pogba scored a goal at the 59th minute, making the score 3 – 1. France was now two goals ahead of Croatia. Following that, Kylian Mbappe scored a goal at the 65th minute making it 4 -1. Croatia was in despair trying to make a comeback but despite several attempts they couldn’t score or stop France from scoring. However, there was a ray of hope for Croatia when Mario Mandzukic scored a goal for Croatia making it 4 – 2 at the 69th minute.

But all in vain for Croatia, France held their score and their defense was tense as Croatia couldn’t score any further. The match came to an end with a score 4 – 2. France won the game staying two goals ahead of Croatia.
