In a bold move, the Indian government has wielded its regulatory hammer, banning 18 OTT platforms notorious for hosting content that tiptoed on the edge of decency. These platforms, once thriving hubs for entertainment, have now been silenced due to their penchant for pushing boundaries.

The list reads like a roll call of mischief-makers: Dreams Films, Neon X VIP, Besharams, and more. These platforms, once the darlings of digital entertainment, have been unceremoniously yanked from the spotlight. Their crime? Thus, a penchant for serving up a heady cocktail of obscenity, vulgarity, and outright pornographic material.

What Went Wrong?

The content that led to their demise was nothing short of scandalous. Imagine a world where teachers and students engage in illicit affairs, where incestuous family relationships play out on screen, and where sexual innuendos flow freely. These platforms reveled in it all, leaving little to the imagination. Also, their content was a smorgasbord of nudity, explicit scenes, and themes devoid of any societal relevance.

The Legal Jargon

The government didn’t pull punches. They cited violations of Sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Section 292 of the IPC, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. These platforms had crossed the line, and the authorities weren’t having it. Also, one of these platforms, unnamed but infamous, had over 1 crore downloads. Two others weren’t far behind, boasting more than 50 lakh downloads on the Google Play Store. Their popularity was undeniable, but so was their transgression.

The Social Media Circus

These OTT platforms weren’t content with just their apps. They took to social media like wildfire. Trailers, tantalizing scenes, and external links flooded our feeds. Their cumulative followership? A staggering 32 lakh users. The government had to act swiftly to protect the masses. The Ministry of I&B isn’t the villain here. They’ve consistently engaged with OTT platforms, urging self-regulation. Thus, the industry’s growth matters, but not at the cost of morality. The government’s light-touch regulatory framework and self-regulation under the IT Rules aim to strike that delicate balance.
