Former England cricketer Graham Thorpe dies at the age of 55. It is sad news for the cricket fraternity. He was one of the best to play the game of cricket for England. Graham played cricket for 12 years from 1993 to 2005 for England. England Cricket Board has released a statement and shared the deep sorrow over his demise. The statement read,

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Graham Thorpe, MBE, has passed away. There seem to be no appropriate words to describe the deep shock we feel at Graham’s death.”

More than one of England’s finest-ever batters, he was a beloved member of the cricket family and revered by fans all over the world.

His skill was unquestioned, and his abilities and achievements across a 13-year international career brought so much happiness to his teammates and England and Surrey CCC supporters alike. Later, as a coach, he guided the best England Men’s talent to some incredible victories across all formats of the game.

Graham Thorpe has been seriously ill since 2022. He was appointed as Afghanistan’s Head Coach in 2022. However, he was unable to take up this position because of his serious illness. During that time, the cricket board released a statement on behalf of Thorpe’s family, saying he had “fallen seriously ill” at the time and was in the hospital to receive treatment, and adding that ‘his prognosis is unclear at this stage.’

Graham Thorpe was among the few cricketers scoring a century on his Test debut. He made his international debut in 1993. He scored 114 in the second innings of the Trent Bridge match against arch-rivals Australia in July 1993. His knock helped England to draw the  Test.

Graham played 100 Tests for England and scored 6744 runs at an average of 44.66. He hit 16 hundreds and 39 fifties during his Test career with a best of 200 not out against New Zealand at Christchurch in March 2002. He was also the Ashes Player of the Series in 1997 when he scored 453 runs at an average of 50.33.

In ODIs, the southpaw has scored 2380 runs at 37.18 average with 21 fifties. He played two ICC World Cups for England in 1996, and 1999. Graham Thorpe peaked at the No. 3 ranking in Tests in 1998. Even in the county, he was a legend. He scored 21,937 runs for Surrey in first-class cricket, with 49 centuries to his name and an average of 45.04.

After retiring from cricket in 2005, Graham Thorpe held coaching positions with Surrey, New South Wales, and England Men’s side. He was the batting coach when England won the 2019 World Cup. He was England’s assistant coach until the 2021-22 Ashes tour of Australia. In March 2022, Graham was appointed as Afghanistan’s Head Coach, but he could not take up the offer due to his illness.
