Harvinder Singh Makes History: Wins India’s First Paralympics Gold In Archery At Paris

On Wednesday, Harvinder Singh became the first Indian archer to strike gold at the Paralympics. He won over Lukasz Ciszek of Poland in the final of the men’s individual. It added to India’s record-breaking medal tally.

He is 33- years old and won a bronze three years ago in Tokyo. He made improvements all this time and became a well-deserved gold medallist. Harvinder defeated Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek 6-0 in a one-sided final to create history for himself and the country.

Harvinder started his day with a strong 7-3 win against Lung-Hui Tseng of Chinese Taipei in the 1/16 eliminator round. After that, he dominated Indonesia’s Setiwan in the 1/8 elimination round quickly.

In the quarterfinal, he repeated his win against Colombian Hector Julio Ramirez. This moved him to the semi-finals of the event. There he defeated Aarb Ameri Mohammad Reza. This win was special as it took him to the finals. The archer from Haryana has a disability in his leg. This happened due to dengue treatment that harmed him when he was a child.

Club thrower Dharambir also finished his first with a record-breaking throw. World champion Sachin Sarjerao Khilari, short putter, and another club thrower, Pranav Soorma, won a silver medal. For India, their performances were also a major highlight on Wednesday.

On Wednesday Khilari said, “I had wanted to win the gold medal, but it did not happen. It’s my best distance but I am not satisfied. I feel I could have done better. It was not my day.”

This performance took India’s medal win to 24. Overall, our nation is currently placed in the 13th position. We are standings with 05 gold medals, 09 silver medals, and 10 bronze medals. This is India’s biggest win at the event. It will surely get better with three more days of competition.
