We are so much dependent on medicines, that even for small issues, we take antibiotics, without knowing that it could be more harmful. Now, the center has taken a big step towards it. They have banned 156 fixed-dose combination (FDC) medicines with immediate effect. An expert committee had found ‘no therapeutic justification’ for these combinations. As they pose a risk to the patients. The drugs include painkillers, to treat colds, allergies, and fevers.
As per the sources, the latest list also includes some of the pre-1988 medicines that were previously exempt from the ban. An industry expert said,
“The notification has taken the industry by surprise as it has banned the manufacture, sale, and distribution of the medicines with immediate effect.”
What About The Drugs That Are Already In The Market?
The question is how will the drug companies withdraw products that are already in the market? In addition, pre-1988 drugs have also been banned by this notification, why was this decision taken? These medicines have been in use for years and there is no evidence of harm.
In a gazette notification dated August 21, 2024, the government said the use of the drug Fixed Dose Combination (FDC) of Amylase, Protease, Glucoamylase, Pectinase, Alpha Galactosidase, Lactase, Beta-Gluconase, Cellulase, Lipase, Bromelain, Xylanase, Hemicellulase, Malt diastase, Invertase, Papain is likely to involve risk to human beings whereas safer alternatives are available in the market.
How The Professionals, Manufacturers And Consumers Have Reacted?
Professionals, manufacturers, and consumers have different reactions to this decision. Professionals think that it is the right choice for the safety of the patient and people consuming medicine. On the other hand, manufacturers are raising questions as it will impact their business. Meanwhile, consumers support the decision. However, some patients seemed confused as to what they had to take and who all were following those medicines regularly.
Ban Was Issued Under Section 26A
The ban was issued under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, of 1940, which gives Powers of the Central Government to regulate, restrict, or prohibit the manufacture, etc., of drugs and cosmetics in the public interest.
The DTAB’s recommendations, the notification said that “the Central government is satisfied that it is necessary and expedient in the public interest to prohibit the manufacture, sale, and distribution for human use of the said drug in the country.”
In June last year, 14 FDCs from the original list were banned. Many of the recently banned drugs were also part of the original list. A few days ago, the government also banned one combination of paracetamol.
Well, the medical authority said, this is the best and perfect solution and should not be changed. The decision was taken after every research in science and law as well. So, we would like to believe that whatever decisions are being is for human safety and to keep everyone out of danger. The consumer has faith in doctors and the medicines prescribed by them, so it is the government’s duty to protect them. As it is the right of every human being to live a peaceful life.
