Just Like any other insurances like Health insurance, Vehicle insurance, Now you can also avail Travel insurance.
IRCTC has taken an initiative step to provide "Travel insurance" to give the financial protection to its passengers from untoward accidents.
The ministry of Railway decided to offer optional travel insurance scheme to passengers traveling with reserved tickets.
However, the travel insurance scheme is only available to the passengers who book the tickets online.
Railway is also planning to launch ‘Clean my Coach’ service on Pan-India basis. The speciality of service is that a traveler can request cleaning of his/her coach or toilets on demand through SMS.
Railway minister Suresh Prabhu says, The initiative step has been taken to minimize the financial losses to passengers. We observe, in the last 4 years, over 330 people died while traveling in trains. This significant move can help in increasing the insurance penetration in the country.
“The Railway Board has given the approval for the tender,” said the official.
According To The Letter, Travel Insurance Scheme Is As Follows
Rs. 10 lakh coverage will be provided in the case of death and permanent disability
Rs 7.5 lakh Coverage Will be given to permanent partial disability
Rs 5 lakh coverage to hospitalization expense for injury.
Rs 10,000 coverage to transportation of mortal remains.
The one-time insurance coverage will be valid from the actual departure to actual arrival of train for passengers who opt for e-ticketing.
Companies That Came Forward
13 million passengers are served by the Indian railway network daily.
For the implementation of the new insurance scheme, IRCTC got bidding's from 19 insurance companies. Out of which 17 got chance and the railways issued authorization letters to the three companies who won the bidding.
The three companies were chosen on the basis of the lowest bid. They are Royal Sundaram General Insurance Company Ltd, Shriram General Insurance Company Ltd and ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd.
