India seems to perform really well in the Common Wealth Games this year. On the first day of the event, India won Silver Medal in the Weightlifting male category. Whereas bagging its first gold medal in Common Wealth Games for Weightlifting Women Category.
Meerabai Chanu Wins Gold Medal
In 48kg weightlifting, Meerabai Chanu brings a gold medal for India in commonwealth games breaking her own record by lifting 196kg of weight, 86 kg in snatch and 110 jerk and lift.
She broke her own record in a jerk and lift when she lifted 107kg of weight in first turn and 110kg in the second.
Before this Meerabai Chanu has won Silver Medal in the 48kg category during the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Padmashree Winner. For her great sports personnel, she was awarded Padmashree award a few days back. After winning a gold medal in this category Miss Chanu has set a new record for lifting the heaviest weight in commonwealth games and Commonwealth championship.
MeeraBai Chanu is hailed from Manipur and works as a Senior Ticket Collector in Railways.
Gururaja Pujari Wins Silver Medal
On the first innings of commonwealth games, Gururaja Pujari bagged silver medal for India in 56kg Weightlifting category. He lifted a total of 256kg (111kg in snatch and 138kg in clean and jerk). This category had participants from 12 countries and Gururaja’s efficiency brought him to the second position.
During South Asian games Gururaja won Gold Medal for India.
Father is a Truck Driver.
Gururaja Pujari belongs to coastal Karnataka. His father works as a pickup truck driver. He says “we’re a family of eight people, in the initial days of my training I didn’t have the money to buy supplements and proper diet. However, it all got better with time.”
Gururaja told the reporters that he was interested in wrestling but his coach told him to go for Weightlifting. He works in the Airforce and loves sports.
