Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Doctors In India Announce Indefinite Strike

Protests over the rape and killing of a trainee physician in Kolkata have shocked the world. Several doctors from hospitals throughout India have called for an ongoing walkout. For the sake of justice for the trainee doctor who was raped and killed in Kolkata, FORDA has initiated a statewide strike, calling for the CBI to investigate the case and for all hospitals to adopt the Central Protection Act.

The 32-year-old female doctor was on duty on Thursday night and was a second-year student in the chest medicine department. She was bleeding from her lips, eyes, and private areas, and the preliminary autopsy report revealed that she had experienced sexual abuse before her death, according to officials.

 

Doctors On Nationwide Strike Against The Rape Case

The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association of India called for a statewide stop to elective treatments on Monday, endorsing the strike. The association has also informed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of its decision. Dr. Bharani Kumar, president of the Resident Doctors’ Associations at Safdarjung Hospital and Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College in Delhi, has announced that the RDA has chosen to close all elective services, including outpatient clinics, elective operations, and ward chores, as of Monday.

“We are deeply grieved by this heinous crime and demand an immediate, transparent investigation with severe punishment for those responsible,” he said.

“The govt must swiftly implement the ‘Central Protection Act for Doctors’ and enhance security measures across hospitals nationwide, including installation of CCTV cameras in high-risk areas. Today it happened in Bengal, tomorrow it could be Delhi or any other part of the nation,” he added.

“We are thankful that everybody has given equal contribution and more organizations and people are joining to this cause. “Our cause is that the incident at RG Kar Hospital is the worst that could have happened to any on-duty doctor… rape followed by murder is deeply disturbing,” Mathur told.

Sarvesh Pandey, the general secretary of FORDA, stated that almost 3 lakh doctors in the country have joined the protest. He also stated that more people should follow suit. Additionally, he told them that they would not end their strike until their demands were met.

“We will continue our strike until we get a written assurance that our demands will be fulfilled” Dr. Sarvesh Pandey, said.

 

Kolkata Police Detain Civic Volunteer Suspect

The Kolkata Police located and detained Sanjay Roy, a suspect who was employed as a civic volunteer, throughout the investigation. In the meantime, the Kolkata police headquarters in Lalbazar has called in three junior physicians and one home staff member. According to Kolkata Police officials, they were at work the night of the event. Protests and public indignation have resulted from the unfortunate incident that happened on August 9.

 

RG Kar Principal Resigns Amid Controversy

Meanwhile, Professor (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh, the principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, announced his resignation.

“… I am getting defamed on social media…The deceased doctor was like my daughter. As a parent, I resign… I don’t like that this should happen to anyone in the future,” he stated.

Mamata Banerjee visited the doctor’s home and spoke with her parents and other family members. Ms. Banerjee stated that she has no problem with central agencies conducting an investigation if the family requests it.
