The comedian Kunal Kamra informed police officers that he stands firm in keeping his “Gaddar” (traitor) comment from his performance. The controversial remark directed towards Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stands, even though Kamra continues to maintain his stance. The public apology will occur only when the court mandates it because Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis wanted him to do it.
The police representative from Tamil Nadu heard Kamra explain that the opposition’s payments had no part in his Shinde-focused performance. He allowed the police to scrutinize his financial records to demonstrate his complete lack of gratification, similar to accusations against him.
A controversy erupted after Mumbai’s civic body tore down the studio where Kamra hosted his show. The officials took down the studio because they found a violation, although they failed to specify what it was.
Political Firestorm Over ‘Gaddar’ Remark
Shiv Sena supporters who backed Shinde carried out destructive acts by breaking into the Mumbai studio where Kamra worked. Footage captured a mob storming into Habitat Studio in Khar and destroying facilities while they threw chairs. Shiv Sena protesters carried out a demonstration by burning Kamra’s image in front of Thane Police Station, which served as Shinde’s political base. The police released all 11 detained individuals within hours of their arrest.
The Habitat Studio distanced itself from Kamra after the attack, asserting that performers held sole responsibility for their comments. On the following day, Mumbai’s civic authority carried out a demolition of the studio due to unspecified violations.
Owners also said, “We are shutting down until we figure out the best way to provide a platform for free expression without putting ourselves and our property in jeopardy.”
Kamra’s statement has generated significant emotional responses across different political groups. Eknath Shinde, who was previously a top Shiv Sena leader, launched a rebellion in 2022, which divided the party and forced Uddhav Thackeray to lose his government’s control. The faction that Shinde led united with the BJP to create the present state government.
The BJP-led government filed multiple police complaints against Kamra, and Pratap Sarnaik from Maharashtra filed one of these complaints as the state transport minister.
Opposition leaders do not share the same level of outrage that has been directed at the incident. Aaditya Thackeray attacked Shinde by accusing him of being “an insecure coward,” while Priyanka Chaturvedi mentioned Kamra didn’t specifically name “Shinde” during his statements.
She further added, “Their vandalism shows that it hurt them and that there is truth in the joke. What kind of intolerance is this? If you don’t like something, file a police complaint.”
