Why Is A Ban Implemented?
The Lt. Governor stated that tobacco products are now affecting youngsters and kids. The menace should be contained for further generations. He also stressed that the notice should be implemented quickly and no lackadaisical attitude shall be tolerated in the territory.
An official stated, “The Lt. Governor, while invoking his powers provided under Article 239 AA (4) of the Constitution of India, has issued these orders banning tobacco products (gutka/paan masala), giving utmost importance to the issue of public health and in light of the rising number of oral cancer cases in the capital.”
Article 239 AA consists of special provisions concerning Delhi.
Moreover, The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, under the food safety and standards regulations 2011, has also prohibited and restricted the sale of tobacco and nicotine products to be used as ingredients in food products.
What Is The Benefit Of The Restrictions?
The officials said, “This move will prohibit the manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale of tobacco and going by the name or form of gutka, paan masala, flavored /scented tobacco, Kharra or otherwise by whosoever.” The banned products consist of packed and unpacked tobacco. And the ban will remain for a period of one year.
This year, in April, the Delhi high court also affirmed a ban imposed by the food safety commissioner on the manufacturing, storage, and sale of gutka, paan masala, flavored tobacco, and similar products in the national capital. The ban will help in avoiding youngsters and children from consuming tobacco and its products.
In conclusion, the ban is imposed for the welfare of citizens residing in Delhi. This will help in declining the number of mouth cancer cases among citizens.
