An independent fine art, classic car, and charity auctioneer who conducted more than 2500 auctions globally, Hugh Edmeades was associated with the iconic Christie’s for 38 years before going independent. Hugh Edmeades took over from Richard Madley in 2018 and has been a constant figure at the IPL auctions since then. According to Sportstars, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already informed their decision not to call Hugh Edmeades for this year’s IPL auction 2024.

On the first day of the IPL 2022 Mega auction at the ITC Gardenia Hotel in Bengaluru, Edmeades collapsed on the stage while auctioning Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga. He was rushed to hospital immediately and was found that he grieved from Postural hypotension. But he had returned to take over his duties. During that crisis, Charu Sharma was the one who held Edmeades’ position and did a marvelous job. As per reports, Edmeades was also back as auctioneer in IPL 2023 in Kochi.

But this time, it’s astonishing to know that the IPL Premier League (IPL) auction for the 2024 season will not see Hugh Edmeades exerting the auctioneer’s gavel. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opted for a change after five seasons, choosing not to retain the seasoned auctioneer for the upcoming event in Dubai on 19th December. In the meantime, instead of Hugh Edmeades, Mallika Sagar, an auctioneer at Pundole’s in Mumbai, is being eyed as a potential replacement for the auctioneer in Dubai.
