Today it was the last day of the league matches of this World Cup. The World Cup is coming to the last stage of the tournament and all the four teams are finalized for semi-finals. There are India, Australia, England, and New Zealand. In Match 44, it was India vs Sri Lanka today. India won their last league match of the tournament quite comfortably as they defeated Sri Lanka by 7 wickets. Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field first. 1. Sri Lanka Poor Start
Sri Lanka started poorly as Jasprit Bumrah sent the openers within first 10 overs. At one stage Sri Lanka was struggling at 55 for 4 in 12 overs. Then Sri Lanka’s most experienced player Angelo Matthews took charge along with Lahiru Thrimanne put together 124 runs partnership.
This partnership took Sri Lanka out of trouble. Kuldeep Yadav broke this 124 run stand by sending Lahiru Thirimanne at 53. Then Matthews was joined by Dananjaya de Silva. The duo put 74 runs stand.
Angelo Matthews scored the third century of his career, all against India. With the help of his century, Sri Lanka scored 264 for 7. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers for India as he took 3 wickets for 37 runs in his 10 overs. Rest all bowlers Bhuvneshwar, Hardik, Kuldeep, and Ravindra Jadeja took a wicket each.
2. India’s Powerful Start
India started aggressively. Rohit Sharma is in outstanding form and he kept the same in this match too. KL Rahul gave good support to Rohit Sharma. The duo put together a huge 189 run partnership. Rohit Sharma scored his third consecutive 100 and fifth in this World Cup.
The most hundreds in a single World Cup is now of Rohit Sharma. Rohit Sharma got out at 103, but it was too late for Sri Lanka. Rajitha took the wicket of Rohit Sharma. Both Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul scored a century.
This is the first time in the World Cup when two Indian openers scored a century in the same match. Sri Lanka was never in the match when these two were batting. Though Lasith Malinga took KL Rahul at 111, it was too late for Sri Lanka.
India won the match comfortably by 7 wickets. Virat Kohli was not out at 34. India needs to win this match to finish at the top of the table. However, Australia also has to lose for that against South Africa for India to be on top. Lasith Malinga, Isuru Udana, and Rajitha took a wicket each.
3. Rohit Sharma – Man Of The Match
For his fifth hundred of 103 in 94 balls with 14 fours and 2 sixes at the match 44, Rohit Sharma became the Man of the match. India will need to wait for the result of other game between Australia and South Africa to find out whom they will face at the World Cup semis.
