For the first time in Iranian history, a woman has been officially appointed as government spokeswoman by Iran. Fatemeh Mohajerani is 54-years-old. She was introduced by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in a cabinet meeting on Wednesday. Amid the significant role, Mohajerani has just been assigned to become an open face of new turns and twists in Iran’s politics.

When she became vice-chancellor, Dr. Fatemeh Mohajerani was the institution’s president for women during Iran’s 11th government. She had previously been made director of the Centre for Brilliant Talents by Education Minister Seyyed Mohammad Bat’hai in 2017. She has held various positions within the ministry. Mohajerani, a 54-year-old with a doctorate in business administration from Edinburgh University in Scotland, will become government spokesman.

The appointment of Mohajerani is just an example of the wave of women taking senior positions in the Iranian government. President Pezeshkian recently appointed Shina Ansari as Deputy President and Head of the Department of Environment, succeeding Ali Salajegheh.

Ansari has a PhD in Environmental Management from Science and Research University. There she was an environmental specialist focusing in particular on waste management and sustainable development. Before coming to her new position, she was an advisor at Tehran’s Municipality Air Quality Control Centre.

There she also supervised environmental control. She later took charge of all environmental work. It included solid waste disposal as head of the Environment & Sustainable Development Division at this municipality.

Second Woman Minister post-1979 Revolution

There has been no second woman minister in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The addition of Farzaneh Sadeq Malvajard as Roads and Urban Development Minister may be seen as compensation for this lack.

From January 2019 to July 2023, she also served as Deputy Minister of Urban Planning and Architecture. Despite some opposition, securing 230 votes from roughly 285 legislators allowed her to work until August, when Pezeshkian finally offered the post. Sadeq 500 and 48 follow Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi, who was the Health and Medical Education Minister under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
