After months of rumors, leaks, and a billionaire cage fight challenge between Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, Threads, has finally launched. It is the Meta-created Twitter rival. Now, you may use the iOS and Android apps or the desktop version of Threads.net to get to the latest platform.

Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, remarked in an interview with Alex Heath of The Verge regarding the debut of Threads:

“Obviously, Twitter pioneered the space… but just given everything that was going on, we thought there was an opportunity to build something that was open and something that was good for the community that was already using Instagram.”

You may contribute pictures and videos that are up to five minutes long—also text postings with up to 500 characters on Threads. The program has a primary interface with the ability to like, comment, repost, and share threads, and it has a style that is somewhat reminiscent of Twitter. Because Threads and Instagram are closely related, you can quickly follow all the same users on both platforms by logging in using your Instagram account.

Similar to Instagram, Threads’ main feed combines suggested material with updates from your followers. Although it doesn’t appear like there is a similar choice as there is on Twitter to swap between streams of stuff that are suggested and following-only, Meta might potentially implement it in the future.

Some of Instagram’s privacy restrictions, such as the option to filter out certain terms in answers, are also being extended to Threads. You may also restrict who can respond to your threads to everybody on the site, those you follow, or just users you mention in your message.

At launch, Meta will not have Threads support for ActivityPub. The decentralized social networking protocol, which Mastodon also uses, would allow you to move your data from Threads to another site. Meta tells,

“We believe this decentralized approach, similar to the protocols governing email and the web itself, will play an important role in the future of online platforms. Threads is Meta’s first app envisioned to be compatible with an open social networking protocol — we hope that by joining this fast-growing ecosystem of interoperable services, Threads will help people find their community, no matter what app they use.”

Twitter Imposes Restrictions

The introduction of Threads coincides with Twitter tightening its user policies. One such limitation prevents unverified users from accessing more than 600 posts each day. Additionally, Twitter prevented users who were not signed in from accessing tweets on the network before secretly undoing the move and introducing a new TweetDeck that needed a verified membership.

Meta is introducing it in more than 100 countries, including the US, although it won’t be accessible there. Mosseri, who claims to currently reside in Europe, provided the following justification for not launching there:

“The complexities with complying with some of the laws coming into effect next year are significant. We don’t want to launch anything that isn’t forward-compatible with what we know and what we think is coming. It’s just going to take longer to ensure that it’s compliant and that any claims we make about how we’ve implemented compliance stand up to our very high set of documentation and testing centers internally. “
