On 27 August 2023, a military exercise turned into a tragic accident. A helicopter carrying at least 20 US Marines crashed off the coast of Darwin, Australia. How Did The Helicopter Crash?
The incident occurred during the ‘Predators Run’ drill. A joint training operation involving personnel from Australia, the United States, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Timor-Leste. Moreover, the helicopter was carrying about 20 US Marines. Furthermore, this incident has promoted a pause in the Predators Run exercise. This had around 2,500 participants. Further, among the participants, 500 were from the United States, 120 were from the Philippines, 120 were from Indonesia, and 500 were from Timor-Lestee.
The cause of the crash is yet to be revealed. Moreover, an investigation is underway. The incident was described as “tragic” by the Marine Rotation Force- Darwin. Allegedly, it is ‘possible’ casualties may result from the crash, as some personnel remain unaccounted for. CareFlight jets have been spotted leaving Darwin airport for the major rescue operation, and Royal Darwin Hospital is gearing up to treat any people involved in the crash.
The Authorities’ Take
The ADF said in a statement, “Initial reports suggest the incident involves United States defense personnel and that the Australian Defence Force members were not involved.”
Moreover, the Northern Territory Police have issued a brief statement confirming that they are “currently responding to the reports of an aircraft crash on Melville Island.”
Further, the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, said, “Our focus as a government and as a department of defense is very much on incident response and ensuring that every support and assistance is given at this difficult time.”
Further, it is said no Australian Personnel were involved.
The tragic incident happened shortly after another helicopter crash involving an MRH90 Taipan chopper last month. This plunged into the ocean off the Whitsunday with four defense personnel on board. Further, the incident sparked condolences from Australian officials. They expressed sympathy to the families of those affected by the crash.
