After its completion, the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway will be Maharashtra’s most important infrastructure project. Only a small section for connecting roads remains under construction. MSRDC confirms that this 701-km-long expressway began during Devendra Fadnavis’s leadership and will open for full operation from mid-March 2025.

Construction on the 76-kilometer portion of the expressway has been completed. The expansive expressway, which started its development in November 2015, required nine years of construction work to reach its final phase. Travelers today experience a 625-km seamless journey between Nagpur and Igatpuri near Nashik. The final section that completes the expressway route to Mumbai will soon become operational.

What’s Holding Up The Last Connection?

The primary expressway is already operational, but Mumbai’s critical connection to it remains under construction. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is currently constructing this segment, with an estimated finish date of March 10. After the completion of the remaining connecting segment, the Samruddhi Mahamarg road system will provide continuous travel between Mumbai and Nagpur.

Engineering Marvel: 16 Phases, 16 Construction Firms

The Samruddhi Expressway was built in sixteen different phases using twenty-four leading construction companies. The strategic separation of project responsibilities among these 16 construction firms accelerated its progress while overcoming land acquisition challenges, environmental constraints, and topographical complexities. The highway employs world-class safety measures, state-of-the-art engineering principles, and multiple tunnel constructions.

What This Means For Maharashtra

The Samruddhi Expressway serves as a time-saving infrastructure milestone that will enhance connectivity, expand commercial activity, and drive fast-paced economic growth throughout Maharashtra. The expressway will reach full operational status and deliver the following benefits when it becomes fully functional. The journey between Mumbai and Nagpur will become 8 hours shorter compared to the 16 hours previously needed for completion.

  • Reduce travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from 16 hours to just 8 hours.
  • Improve connectivity to districts like Nashik, Aurangabad, and Amravati.
  • Boost industrial and logistics hubs along its route.
  • Enhance road safety with intelligent traffic management systems.

The completion of this transformative project will soon unlock its full impact throughout Maharashtra in the coming weeks.

Was The Samruddhi Expressway Project Delayed?

The Samruddhi Expressway experienced delays due to the opening of its final 76-km segment that runs between Igatpuri and Amane. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) originally intended to launch this section partially between November and December 2024. However, officials delayed the opening until the entire infrastructure was complete, as the new state government decided to finalize the remaining tasks and open it all at once.

The stretch between Igatpuri and Amane has now completed its main construction work but experienced some minor delays. Final works, such as tree plantation and crash barrier installation, are underway, with completion expected by mid-March 2025.

  • On May 23, 2023, Eknath Shinde, the then-chief minister of Maharashtra, opened the roadway section extending between Shirdi and Bharvir.
  • The 25-km Bharvir to Igatpuri stretch was opened on March 4, 2024, without an official ceremony.
  • Full operations will begin once construction on the remaining 76-km section between Igatpuri and Amane is completed, enabling uninterrupted travel from Mumbai to Nagpur.

The official name of the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway is Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg.
