The Central government has launched a new cashless treatment scheme for all accident victims nationwide. Indian Union Minister Nitin Gadkari came up with this initiative, where accident victims receive immediate medical and financial aid from the victim’s families. It will ensure that the victims are given immediate care without worrying about the cost.
How Does The Cashless Treatment Scheme Work?
Under this scheme, the eligibility for road accident victims would be up to ₹1.5 lakh in cashless medical treatment. If they want to avail themselves of the benefit, they must report the accident to the police within 24 hours. The financial aid will cover medical expenses up to 7 days after the accident.
In hit-and-run cases, the cashless treatment scheme will compensate the victim’s family with ₹2 lakh. The scheme will be implemented using an IT infrastructure that links accident reports with healthcare services to ensure a smooth procedure for victims and their families.
Why Is This Scheme Needed?
As presented above, 2024 began by setting shocking facts for road accidents in India: According to one account by the Union Minister, almost 1.80 lakh were reported dead on roads last year; of course, several could be saved with emergency care. Significant facts include:
- 66% of the victims were young adults between 18 and 34 years old.
- About 10,000 children died in accidents near schools due to unsafe entry and exit points.
This scheme focuses on providing financial and medical support during the golden hour, the critical time after an accident when immediate care can save lives.
Other Road Safety Efforts
Besides cashless treatment scheme, the government is taking several other safety measures on the roads:
- Safety Rules for Transporting School Students: New rules are being strictly implemented for transporting school-going children. Infrastructure around schools is also being improved.
- Driver Training Institutes: Special institutes are planned to be started for commercial drivers so that the risk of driver fatigue is decreased to a lower level.
The government also poses e-rickshaw regulations and rules for cars with women and children, which are tightened to ensure safety.
