One of the major steps that TRAI has suggested for telecom companies is to trace the source of messages. The main focus here is the commercial and one-time passwords (OTPs). TRAI announced it in August and companies were given a deadline of October 31 to implement. Still, the deadline was extended up till November 30 following requests from major telecom companies Jio, Vi, and BSNL.

If telecom operators Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL start implementing these traceability measures on December 1, users may experience delays in OTP messages. Consequently, if you are engaged in activities like banking or booking reservations, you could find yourself waiting longer for your OTP.

Why New OTP Rules From TRAI?

TRAI has introduced this rule because scammers often use fake OTP messages to trick people and steal money. The telecom companies should track these messages, and TRAI wants to keep customers safe from such scams.

Conclusion

Starting January 1, 2025, a new rule will come into effect for customers of Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL. This rule is designed to speed up the development of 5G networks across the country, helping to improve connectivity and technology for everyone.

The government has introduced new rules under the Telecom Act that all states must follow. These rules called the Right of Way (RoW), set standard costs for telecom companies to install infrastructure across the country. Right now, RoW rules vary from state to state, which means companies face different charges and processes in each state. The new guidelines will make the process simpler and more uniform nationwide.
