Following his dramatic arrest on Tuesday, supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan battled with security forces. Khan was arrested while appearing in court in Islamabad on corruption charges. His detention represents a massive increase in the political unrest in the country. Protests raged across Pakistan, notably in Islamabad, Karachi, and Khan’s hometown of Lahore.

Khan remains influential in the face of a severe economic catastrophe. People protested his detention in droves around the country. If convicted, Imran Khan, by far the most popular opposition figure, will almost certainly be barred from running in the November elections. He has been released by the court on bail.

Protest Against Army

It is the first time in Pakistan’s seven decades of existence that the army — the self-proclaimed guardian of Pakistan Ideology and the Pakistani State, which has gotten fat consuming on the country’s inadequate resources — has come under immediate and enormous strain from the masses, who believed the army could do no wrong until yesterday.

The World Bank-imposed austerity regime on Pakistan’s import-dependent economy has pinched the common man with 30%+ inflation and a value-depleted Pakistani rupee (300 P-rupees presently purchase one US dollar). Despite this, the Pakistan army continues to live essentially. The Pakistani people have revolted against the military’s long-standing puppet lord role in the country’s affairs.

The former prime minister faces charges of corruption, primarily for the double-tripping of funds worth Rs 50 billion (190 million pounds) siphoned from the exchequer and returned to Pakistan via UK banks, a transaction assisted by the shady real estate magnate Malik Riaz.

Riaz is noted for having army generals in his pocket and generous gifts of houses and plots in colonies he has created on property his uniformed pals have assisted him in securing through fair but largely filthy means.

Pakistan’s Situation

Allow the entire world to see that Martial law has been reinstated in Pakistan. The army has been deployed in Punjab, Pakistan’s largest province.

Protesters have weapons to defend themselves now. An entire arms store was stormed in response to security personnel opening fire on protestors. Individuals grabbed all the firearms and bullets. The army has been called in to enforce martial law. The internet has been turned off.

“Khan has given a message to the Pakistani public… ‘Tell the nation that if martial law is imposed by [army chief] Asim Munir, you have to stand strong for the rule of law,'” ex-PM’s lawyer informs Arab News.
