Following their attendance at the Women of Vision Awards at New York’s Ziegfeld Ballroom, Prince Harry and Meghan, escorted by Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, were chased by photographers in a caravan. They appeared disturbed after the encounter, but no injuries were recorded, as confirmed by their security detail to CNN.

According to reports, the paparazzi were keen to find out where the couple stayed while visiting New York City. The photographers acted recklessly, running red lights while pedestrians were crossing and driving against other cars on Manhattan’s 34th Street. They even drove the wrong way down one-way streets, endangering themselves and others.

One of the royal security team members claimed that he had never seen nor experienced such an incident before. It was extremely chaotic, according to him. However, although the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were terrified, they returned to peace once they reached their apartment safely.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) issued a statement verifying the key elements of the Sussexes’ account. The NYPD’s deputy commissioner for public communications, Julian Phillips, stated that the private security crew protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex faced numerous photographers during their travel on Tuesday evening. However, no collisions or injuries were reported at the end of the incident.

According to the couple’s representative, famous people inherently attract public attention. However, it should never come at the expense of safety. Therefore, they advised the media not to publish any images from the incident.

According to the couple’s team, the accident involved about a half-dozen blacked-out cars driven recklessly by unidentified individuals, endangering both the convoy and those nearby.

To keep up with the couple, paparazzi in scooters and bikes even rode on the pavement. The source stated that there were multiple close calls. It included unexpected stops between the front and back of cars, but no collisions occurred.

Statement By The Mayor Of New York City

New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed his displeasure with the occurrence, calling it “reckless” and “irresponsible.” When asked about the incident during an unrelated briefing, Adams reminded reporters of Harry’s mother’s tragic loss. In addition, he emphasized the importance of caution in a heavily populated metropolis like New York.

Adams emphasized that while paparazzi seek the perfect photo and narrative, public safety should always come first. Prince Harry has continuously pushed for his family’s safety. He drew comparisons between his wife’s treatment and that of the late Princess Diana. Harry addressed the subject of paparazzi in their Netflix docuseries. He highlighted the shift from physical harassment endured by his mother to the contemporary internet harassment common.
