Massive protests broke out at SR Gudlavalleru Engineering College in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district on Thursday after a hidden camera was discovered in the girls’ hostel washroom. Apparently, up to 300 photos and videos were leaked from the women’s hostel washroom. It was shared with some students. It was known that recordings were being purchased from the accused student.

In the year 2022, crimes against women and children saw a rise, as per the data released recently by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Andhra Pradesh stood 6th in the number of cases of crime against women all over the country.

On Thursday, at the SR Gudlavalleru Engineering College in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district, massive protests flared up. After a hidden camera was found in the washroom of the girls’ hostel. According to the announcement, the camera used to secretly record videos of the students. Later, it was leaked and sold to some students. After the realization, it led to a chaotic scene. As students organized a protest that began around 7 pm in the evening. It continued till this morning. Ample number of female students gathered at the hostel premises. Their voice resonated through the ground. They shouted at the top of their voices, “We want justice,” slogans again and again.

They urge authorities to take action against the culprit. The protesters express the need for enhanced security measures. To ensure their safety on campus. As we know, women are not feeling safe around the world. We have many examples/cases that hold us back.

 

Police In Action

The police arrested a senior student from the boys’ hostel. His name is Vijay Kumar, a final-year B-Tech student. It is believed that his laptop contained incriminating evidence. The laptop has been seized now. The investigation is currently underway to uncover the full extent of the breach of privacy.

A statement indicates that over 300 photos and videos from the girls’ washroom were leaked. The same were purchased by some students from the accused student. Nevertheless, while talking to a news agency named ANI, Gudlavalleru Sub-Inspector Satyanarayana said,

“No hidden cameras have been found on the premises so far, but the investigation is ongoing, and further details are awaited.”

This month was already scary and disturbing. The beginning of this month was horrible because of the Dr. Moumita Debnath case. While protesting for her justice, one of the girls was raped. Then later on in Bengaluru, customers at a famous coffee shop discovered a phone hidden in the women’s washroom dustbin to record videos. The incident was revealed by a content creator who had found the camera in the bag, which had a hole in it, and was constantly recording a video.
