Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s speech on ‘dynasty politics’ at the University of California, Berkeley and citing Bollywood as an example while discussing ‘dynasty politics’ in India has irked veteran actor Rishi Kapoor.
Responding to a query at the engagement about the perception that Congress was associated with dynastic politics, Rahul said:
Most parties in India have that problem…Mr Akhilesh Yadav is a dynast. Mr Stalin (son of M Karunanidhi of DMK) is a dynast… even Abhishek Bachchan is a dynast. So, that’s how India runs. So, don’t get after me because that’s how India is run. By the way, last, I recall, Ambanis are running the business. That’s also going on in Infosys. So, that’s what happens in India.
Rishi, who is known for his strong views and opinions, took to Twitter to hit back at the Congress scion.
“Rahul Gandhi. In the 106 years of Indian cinema of India, Kapoor’s contribution is 90 years. And each generation is chosen by public on merit. By God’s grace we are in 4 generations.Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor-Males.Besides all others. You see otherwise. So don’t bullshit people on “Dynasty” You have to earn people’s respect and love through hard work not zabardasti and gundagardi.”
Last year, Rishi had also addressed the Congress and its members in his tweets, suggesting that roads and buildings named by the Congress after members of the Gandhi family be renamed.
Soon after the speech, the Bharatiya Janata Party hit back and called Gandhi a “failed dynast”.
“A failed dynast today chose to speak about his failed political journey in the US… the country (India) is not listening so he is speaking somewhere else,” Union information and broadcasting minister Smriti Irani said at a press conference in New Delhi.
However, the verbal spat continued where Congress leader Anand Sharma said,
“It is the present prime minister who is guilty of insulting India on foreign soil. It is wrong to accuse Rahul Gandhi of having said anything which is belittling. It again betrays the streak of intolerance and criticism by the BJP and the present government,”
