The reports reported 19 passengers were injured in the Mysore-Darbhanga Bagmati Express derailment. No fatalities were reported. However, three passengers were found to be in critical condition. The accident happened at 8:30 PM on the Chennai Guda section, between Ponneri and Kavaraipettai stations, causing major damage to both trains. A few trains, including the Dhanbad-Alappuzha Express and Jabalpur-Madurai superfast special train, were diverted due to restoration work at the accident site.

What Led To Train Derailment?

General Manager of Southern Railways RN Singh said that passenger trains were not supposed to enter the loop line of the goods. After leaving Chennai, he added that the signals of Mysuru Darbhanga express work correctly, followed by the driver. RN Singh said,

“The passenger train – the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express – should have been switched to the main line but something wrong happened.”

He further stated that despite having a green signal for the main line, the train entered the loop line and hit the goods train from behind, causing the derailment of its 12 coaches and injuries of passengers. Officials said that they reported heavy jerking before entering the loop line. The accident killed 12 coaches, and 19 people were injured. Over 1300 passengers were on the train. A power car also caught fire. RN Singh continued,

“The train was headed to Gudur (in Andhra Pradesh). It stopped at Kavaraippettai Railway Station in Tiruvallur, where a goods train also headed to Gudur was on the loop line.” “The express train was given priority (and) was supposed to pass through the main line. But despite the signal clearance for the main line, the passenger train entered the loop line and hit the goods train from behind, leading to the engine derailment.”

There are no certain death reports, and the injured are receiving treatment at the state hospital. Passengers were taken by buses and accommodated on a special train to their respective destinations. The derailment took around 40 km from Chennai. As a result of the derailment and ongoing repair, multiple trains were canceled, and at least 18 trains were scheduled for today, which have now been canceled. A high-level injury has been reported. Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed shock and asked for a rescue operation as soon as possible.
