These Real Cities That Are Found Underwater Around The World

There were many cities that exists in the past but do not exist today. We might not have seen the submerged cities and towns in real. However, there are some real cities that are found underwater around the world. But, here is the list of real cities found underwater.

 

1. Port Royal, Jamaica

Port Royal is the village located at the mouth of Kingston Harbour in Jamaica. It is known as the Pirate hub of Jamaica and as the most sinful city in the world. A massive earthquake estimated at a 7.5 magnitude hit the island on 7th June 1692 and was also hit by tsunami waves; the city got submerged into the water.  It had killed 2000 people. Now the city is called one of the world’s best-preserved underwater cities. Some of the items had been removed and showcased in museums across Jamaica. It is required to get permission from the authorities to scuba dive in the sunken city.

 

2. Baia, Italy

Rome’s Las Vegas city called Baia was the vacation spot for ancient celebrities such as kings and queens, emperors, and royalty. It was the Roman settlement at that time. After foreign forces invaded it in the 8th century, the city was abandoned. The lower part of the city sank due to volcanic activity. It is said that the 2000-year-old remains are partying 20 feet below the surface. Some of the remnants can be seen from a boat, and it has become a tourist spot today for many travelers and tourists.

 

3. Dwarka, India

The ancient city of Lord Krishna lies about 130 feet below modern-day Dwarka in India. According to local legend, it is the city of palaces of Lord Krishna, which was made of precious gems, silver, and gold. This underwater city of Dwarka was discovered in the year 2000, and ancient structures, grids, pillars, and ancient artifacts were found. There were different opinions that the city might be at least 10000 years old while others suggest that it would be 5000 years old. The other claiming is that the Gujarat Sultan Mahmud Begada attacked the city in 1473 and destroyed the Dwarka’s temple.

 

4. The Lost Villages Of Ontario, Canada

The Lost Villages consists of 10 Canadian towns, and all these towns were the municipalities of Cornwall and Osnabruck in Ontario, Canada. After the construction of the waterway in 1958, these regions were submerged. Currently, there are sidewalks and buildings that can be seen from some areas above the water surfaces. A museum was built there to keep the memory alive and dedicated to submerged villages.

 

5. Pavlopetri, Greece

“Paull’s Stone” is the literal translation of Pavlopetri, which is one of the oldest submerged cities and oldest in the Mediterranean Sea. According to the archaeologist’s estimation, the Pavlopetri is around 5000 years old and was discovered in 1967. A year later survey revealed a plan of a prehistoric town called Mycenaean lying 3 to 12 ft below water in Peloponnese. Citing to this, Jon Henderson of the University of Nottingham stated, “It is a unique discovery in the sense that we have found on the seabed an almost complete city, with streets, buildings, gardens, tombs and what looks like a religious complex.”

 

6. Phanagoria, Russia

Phanagoria was founded around 540 BC and now lies under the water of the Black Sea. Once, it was the largest ancient Greek city. The two-third of this old city is still on land and has become a great archaeological site. New discoveries are still made there, and divers found marble plinths, artifacts, and amazing tombstones. Technically this city is now on Russian soil.

 

7. Atlit-Yam, Israel

The Atlit-Yam in Israel is an underwater city that had a lot of artifacts and remnants in it. This submerged Neolithic settlement is reportedly around 8000 years old. This oldest city was discovered 30 feet below underwater in 1984, and many graves, buildings, and old skeletons were also found. Reports suggest that the reason behind the settlement getting submerged would be an earthquake and followed by a tsunami.
