Sambhaji Maharaj was the eldest son and the second ruler of the Maratha kingdom, founded by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He played a crucial role in expanding and defending the Maratha empire. Despite facing immense challenges, he remained a fearless warrior and a brilliant strategist. After his father’s death, Sambhaji Maharaj ascended the throne and laid the foundation for the Maratha resurgence under his younger brother, Rajaram Maharaj, and later, the Peshwa rulers.

From 1681 to 1689, Sambhaji Maharaj ruled the Maratha Empire, engaging in constant warfare. During this period, he faced relentless battles against the Mughal Empire, the Siddi of Janjira, the Wadiyars of Mysore, and the Portuguese Empire.

  • He is remembered for his unwavering bravery, as he refused to submit to foreign dominance.
  • His dedication to preserving Hindu culture and leading the Maratha forces remains a source of inspiration for millions today.
  • His sacrifices established the foundation for the Maratha resurgence under Rajaram Maharaj and later the Peshwa leadership.

On February 1, 1689, Aurangzeb captured Sambhaji Maharaj through deception and subjected him to relentless torture. The Mughal emperor offered him leniency if he converted to Islam, but Sambhaji Maharaj stood firm, rejecting all temptations to abandon his devotion to Deva (God), Desh (Motherland), and Dharma (Religion).

Aurangzeb was so enraged by Sambhaji Maharaj’s defiance that he ordered his gruesome execution. On March 11, 1689, Sambhaji Maharaj was mercilessly tortured and killed, but even in death, he emerged as a symbol of Maratha resistance and unwavering loyalty.

The people of Maharashtra venerate Sambhaji Maharaj as a heroic figure who demonstrated unparalleled bravery against tyranny. Centuries later, his legacy continues to inspire generations, proving the power of resilience and devotion to one’s motherland.
