Why Was Sanjay Singh Suspended?

On Monday, July 24, 2023, Sanjay Singh was suspended from Rajya Sabha for the rest of the Monsoon session. The latter was repeatedly “violating” the directives of the chair while protesting on the Manipur issue. Consequently, Vice President Dhankar had requested the AAP member to take his seat and later named him for ‘unruly behavior’ and cautioned him. Opposition parties condemned the action and accused the government of throttling their voice.

What Does Piyush Goyal Have To Say On This?

The motion of the suspension was proposed by the Union commerce minister and Leader of the house, Piyush Goyal. Goyal added Singh’s behavior was against the ‘ethics and rules of the house. He further said, “This kind of behavior and distributing the house is completely against the ethics and rules of the house. The government wants to move a motion to suspend Sanjay Singh.”

The leader, however, continued to protest in the house even after his suspension. Later, opposition members raised an issue and urged the chairman to revoke the suspension. Not only did they raise a problem, they also walked out in protest and boycotted the meeting of floor leaders.

Aam Aadmi Party and other opposition parties have demanded that PM Modi make a statement on the Manipur issue. To conclude, the government has agreed to a short-duration discussion on Manipur.

Raghav Chadha’s Take

However, reacting to the suspension, Raghav Chadha, an Aam Aadmi Party leader, said,

“It is very unfortunate that the Rajya Sabha chairman suspended Sanjay Singh. This is not right, it is against the spirit of democracy. After the house was adjourned, we went to the chairman and requested him to revoke the suspension… Even during the BAC meeting, we all walked out as we were not being heard at all. The chairman should talk to the MPs and have a healthy discussion.”

Chadha even added that Sanjay Singh kept requesting the chairman’s permission to raise the opposition’s demand for a discussion on Manipur.
