Rishabh Pant left Delhi Capitals before the IPL Mega Auction 2025. He is now in the auction pool and will probably become the most expensive player in IPL history. Recently, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar stated that Rishabh Pant might have parted ways with Delhi Capitals due to a disagreement about the retention fee. Later in that video, Rishabh Pant gave a reply to Sunil Gavaskar.
Rishabh Pant’s Journey With Delhi Capitals
Rishabh Pant has been associated with Delhi Capitals since 2016. He was also the captain of the franchise. However, during the retentions, Delhi Capitals named Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Abhishek Porel, and Tristan Stubbs as their retention players. The name of Rishabh Pant was missing from the retention list. Rishabh Pant has played 111 matches in IPL for Delhi Capitals and scored 3284 runs with an average of 35.3 and a strike rate of 148.9.
Rishabh Pant missed the IPL 2023 because of multiple injuries due to the road accident that happened in December 2022. He led IPL 2024 and was one of the top scorers. Under his leadership, Delhi Capitals finished sixth in the points table and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Sunil Gavaskar On Star Sports Video
A video shared by Star Sports of the IPL auction 2025 is now viral on the internet. In the video, Sunil Gavaskar has stressed over the top players leaving the team to understand the real worth in the Mega Auction. Suggesting that Pant’s case was the same, Gavaskar expects Delhi to target the stumper once again at the auction.
“Delhi would certainly want Rishabh Pant back in the squad. Sometimes, when a player is to be retained, there is talk between the player and franchise about the fees that are expected. As you can see, some of the players who have been retained by the franchise have gone for more than what the No. 1 retention fee would’ve been. Maybe there was some disagreement over there (fees).”
The Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar said in the video,
“My feeling is Delhi would definitely want Pant back because they need a captain as well. If Rishabh Pant is not in their squad, then they have to look for a new captain.”
Rishabh Pant Reacts To Sunil Gavaskar’s Remark
He clarified that he didn’t leave Delhi Capital due to the disagreement about retention fees. Reacting to the video, Rishabh Pant said that his exit from Delhi Capitals was not about the money. He stated,
“My retention wasn’t about the money for sure that I can say.”
Rishabh Pant has made the statement after Sunil Gavaskar suggested that the wicket-keeper batter likely left the franchise due to a disagreement over his retention fee. But Pant confirmed that it wasn’t the case.
Rishabh Pant has been one of the most flamboyant cricketers in the world recently. He can be a captain and also do the wicket-keeping duties. In the IPL mega auction, every time will tried to get him on board. It will be interesting to see which team will bag Rishabh Pant in its team.
The chances of the Punjab Kings are high mainly due to a couple of reasons. The first one is Punjab Kings has the maximum purse available at the auction with over Rs 110 crore. Second, the mentor Ricky Ponting who was with Delhi Capitals in the last season, has now joined Punjab Kings. Ricky Ponting and Rishabh Pant share a healthy bond among them. So, if the Punjab Kings team management wants Rishabh Pant in their team, they can go all out for him.
