In India, the first ever gender vulnerability index was calculated which ranked states on the basis of the safety of women. The report based on challenges faced by Indian women on the parameters, education, health, poverty and protection against violence was prepared by Plan India. The states were ranked on a scale of 0 to 1. The states having index near to one were considered the safest, whereas the ones near to zero were considered the most unsafe.
1. Goa, The Safest!
Well, the results are quite unexpected here, as the safest state according to the Gender Vulnerability Index is Goa. It has a GVI of 0.656. Goa was ranked first in terms of protection.
2. Kerala
Kerala, which is ranked second, has a GVI of 0.634. It is mainly because of the achievements Kerala has gained in the field of health.
3. Mizoram
The North-Eastern states have always been a topic of discussion. On one hand, where Assam is ranked number one in terms of crime against women, Mizoram, on the other hand, is ranked third in terms of safety of women.
4. Sikkim
Another state in North East India which surprised everyone by standing fourth in the list of safest states for women.
5. Manipur
Yet another state in North East India which happens to be in the top 10 safest states for women is doing a lot to improvise the condition of women.
6. Himachal Pradesh
Almost all women living in Himachal Pradesh are working for their livelihood. They help their husband in farming and agriculture. They are bound to traditions, but this state is a safe place for women.
