Have you ever waited in a long line at a toll booth while traveling on the highway? It is quite annoying and time-consuming, right? But here is great news for all of us. India will use a brand new toll system that will remove toll plazas completely. Yes, you heard it right. No more lines and no more struggle. This new toll system will use satellites to collect all charges. Yes, you read that right. No stopping, no waiting, and no honking in lines.
What Is This New Toll System?

Well, you might be curious to know about the new toll system and how it will work. The Indian government is planning to start a satellite-based toll collection system. This means that instead of stopping at every toll plaza to pay the toll, the amount will automatically be deducted from your bank account while you’re driving.
How Will The New Toll System Work?
So how will this work? Every vehicle will have a small device installed inside called an On-Board Unit (OBU). This device will be connected to the satellite and will track how many kilometres you have travelled on the highway. Based on the distance, the toll will be calculated and taken from your linked bank account.
Is This A Good Step?
Well, here are a few reasons that we find it good:
-
No more waiting: You won’t have to stop your car at every toll booth. Just keep driving and enjoy your journey.
- Pay for what you use: Tolls are fixed based on the toll plaza, not how far you have to drive. With this new system, you will only pay for the exact number of kilometres that you drive.
- Saves time and fuel: Since you’re not stopping again and again, you save both time and fuel. That’s good for your wallet and for the environment.
-
More transparent: Everything will happen automatically, so there is no chance of human errors or cheating. It’s all done digitally.
What Will Happen To FASTag?
FASTag will still work for now. The new satellite toll system will slowly start, and both systems will run side by side at first. Later, when most vehicles have OBUs installed, the government may move away from Toll Booths.
If you travel short distances every day, then there is good news for you. If your vehicle has a satellite tracking device, you won’t have to pay any toll for daily travel within 20 km on national highways. This will help people who travel for work and school nearby.
The government plans to start the toll system on May 1, 2025. At first, it will be used on some highways and mainly for commercial vehicles like trucks and buses. Over time, it will be used for all vehicles.
This is a big step for India’s future. It will make highway travel smoother, faster, and smarter. You won’t have to stop your car or worry about carrying cash. Just drive and let the technology handle your toll. So, get ready to say goodbye to the long lines and hello to easy automatic toll payments. India is moving ahead with technology, and this system is just the beginning.
