The Girl on the Bus, the upcoming episode of See No Evil, will examine the horrific murder case of 14-year-old Alianna DeFreeze. On Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at 6 p.m. ET, Investigation Discovery will debut the episode.
According to the official synopsis by IMDb,
“In the dead of winter, a 14-year-old girl vanishes without a trace on her way to school. Her parents have no idea where she could be. Investigators follow a trail of surveillance footage…but will they find the missing teenager before it’s too late?”
What Actually Happened With Alianna DeFreeze?
The results of the original police investigations into Alianna DeFreeze’s disappearance were pretty apparent. DeFreeze was on her way back when she was kidnapped by a guy who had been prowling the neighborhood streets for many hours when she was last observed by her friends and teachers getting off her school bus in the afternoon.
What happened following the kidnapping startled the police force and the whole nation of Ohio, even though the events had been captured on multiple CCTV cameras in the vicinity, providing the authorities with a clear image of who the culprit was. Alianna DeFeeze was allegedly brought to an abandoned house by the guy, who has been identified as Christopher Whitaker, where he raped, tortured, and killed her.
Legal Proceedings
Numerous unsettling details about the heinous murder were revealed throughout the following legal processes. As a result, the jury in the case ultimately decided to execute Whittaker after just a brief period of deliberation. According to reports, the criminal had a history of arrests for offenses including abduction, sexual assault, and burglary.
Alianna DeFreeze And Her Case
Seventh-grader Alianna DeFreeze went to E Prep & Village Prep in Cleveland, Ohio’s neighborhood of Woodland Hills. The 14-year-old used to ride the RTA bus to school since he had a developmental disability as a child. Although Alianna’s mother and grandmother did not appreciate this aspect since they did not want her to feel distinct from the other children around her, they were happy that Alianna’s stop was in front of a police station.
Parent’s Efforts
In January 2017, Alianna DeFreeze was leaving school after a typical day. She boarded an RTA bus and arrived at the predetermined location but never made it home. Alianna’s parents became persuaded that someone had abducted their daughter after enquiring at the school about where she was and asking her classmates when they had last seen her.
They coordinated a comprehensive search effort by not only alerting the police that she was gone but also spreading the word about it around as many neighborhoods as they could and even reporting the incident to the local press.
The Heinous Crime
Despite being able to identify Alianna DeFreeze’s abductor through CCTV footage, police could not find Alianna’s specific whereabouts. When Christopher Whitaker killed her, he left her body in an abandoned home, where three Cleveland Police Department officers found it. They discovered Alianna’s lifeless corpse, which was covered in blood, with bruises and slashes all over her head and many puncture wounds on one cheek. Her right eye was driven out of its socket by an incision on her forehead, one of the most fatal wounds. Additionally, the cops discovered blood-stained clothing strewn throughout the house.
An autopsy indicated that Alianna had been hurt by several things in the residence. Owing to the severity of her wounds, the examiner could not pinpoint which one caused her death. Additionally, Christopher Whitaker’s DNA was found on Alianna DeFreeze’s corpse. It led forensic specialists to believe that he sexually abused her.
The Judgment
Police detained Whitaker and took him to arrest.
Whitaker’s attorneys argued throughout the subsequent judicial processes. They said that the criminal had not been conscious of the crimes he was doing. Reason being he had just used cocaine. But this reasoning apparently infuriated the prosecutors even more, as one of them reportedly said in court:
“The evidence does not point to a drug-induced frenzy, does not point to a blackout. It points to that he knows what he was doing.”
It suggests that he is aware of what he is doing. The jury voted on a death sentence for Whitaker. And also a 48-year jail sentence for rape and evidence concealing following a quick discussion after both sides had presented their evidence. He will be put to death in July 2026.
