The shortest commercial flight in the world which flies between two islands near Scotland covers a distance of 1.7 miles (2.74 Km).
In the year 1967 when internal air transport was established in that area, the flight between these two islands started flying. This line was already included in the plans of Loganair. The flight is still operated by Loganair.
The Flight Duration
The duration of the flight is on average not more than 2 minutes. But whenever the weather conditions are favorable, the flight can be completed in just 47 seconds. This is the least time that a flight between these two islands take.
A pilot hired by Loganair, named, Stuart Linklater, flew on this route for 24 years. Stuart has made the trip between the two islands for more than 12000 times. He was hired by Loganair in 1988 to fly on this route.
“I have enjoyed in flying for the whole time I flew on this line and met many interesting people. Though the line is short, weather conditions in this part of Scotland are very complex, so that it is not an easy job, but I enjoyed every minute” was Stuart’s comment on the experience.
Most Expensive
Besides being the shortest, it costs 21 pounds. Which means it makes to the list of one of the most expensive flights in the world.
Both runways which host this wonderful flight are being upgraded due to new rules and regulations passed in the country. And the two-minute journey between Westray and Papa Westray will continue without a hitch after the changes are made.
