The airports are attractive to see for their land size and amenities. When we talk about airports, the first thing which comes to our mind is their size. The huge runways, exotic lounges, queues for boarding, and sometimes excitement for traveling make it eager to know about airports. We have seen the safest airports, busiest airports, and even fanciest airports around the world. However, it is not the same in all the airports. Some airports have only space for takeoff and landing. Here are the five smallest airports in the world.

1. Juancho Yrausquin Airport

via

Juancho Yrausquin Airport is known as the smallest runway in the world. It is located on the Dutch Caribbean island of Saba. It is named after the Aruban Minister Juancho Yrausquin. At only 400 meters, just a quarter of a mile, the length of the runway is slightly longer than the average aircraft carrier. Both ends of the runway are close to the ocean, with the rocks on edge. The jet aircraft had restricted for landing for its shortest runway as it might overshoot the strip and land in the ocean. Windair is the only airline serving the airport, operating two daily flights to nearby Saint Eustatius and Saint Martin, which take less than 15 minutes to travel by plane.

2. Moshoeshoe International Airport

Moshoeshoe Airport is the smallest servicing the Kingdom of Lesotho, which is entirely landlocked by South Africa. It has only two runways of length about 1000 meters and sits at an elevation of 1630 meters. Even it is officially referred to as an International airport, the only non-domestic flights taking off are to Johannesburg with South African Airways.

This smallest airport is served by the two airlines that are Mission Aviation Fellowship and South African Airways. In addition, the airport has the facilities such as a bar, restaurant, and gift shop for passengers.

3. Barra Airport

Barra Airport is a small airport in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, which is served by Flybe. It has three runways that form a triangle shape. One of the runways is the beach runway, which is the only beach runway in the world to handle scheduled airline services. It services on Barra’s Traigh Mhor beach, and it is open for few hours each day from Monday to Friday.

The shortest runway is running only about 680 meters. Despite its small size, it provides all basic amenities, such as rental, parking, and other services. There is no fixed timing for arrival and departure; it varies depending on the weather condition.

4. Morgantown Municipal Airport

via

This airport is mainly used for general aviation. United Airlines is the only commercial airline serving the Morgantown Airport, which connects the town to Clarksburg and Washington Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C.

The length of this smallest airport is only about 0.5 miles, and it made it easy to see the takeoff and land from the restaurant. In addition to a restaurant, this airport offers other services such as free coffee, parking, and Wi-Fi.

5. Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Nepal

via

A charming village, Lukla is a tourist place in Nepal, and it is the starting point for treks to Mount Everest. This airport is also named after two trekkers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who successfully climbed Mount Everest for the first time. The airport is also known as Lukla airport. However, the airport comes under the smallest airport because of its short runway and remote location. The landing and taking off is challenging in this airport for this reason.
