Indian cricket team for the World Cup 2023 is announced. BCCI selected 15 players and believed in them to bring the World Cup trophy home. Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, announced for the World Cup on Tuesday afternoon. He traveled to Kandy, Sri Lanka, and discussed with Indian coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma before announcing the squad. Star Sports telecasted the press conference at which Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selectors, revealed the player list. The press conference was available for streaming on Hotstar. The Batters
India’s batting heavily depends on Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer. This will also be the first-choice top 4 in the batting order. Surya Kumar Yadav is also in the squad, but his chances of making it to India’s first playing XI are bleak unless any player gets injured.
The Wicketkeepers
KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan are the two who will keep wickets for Team India during the World Cup. KL Rahul is fully fit as per the selectors. He is returning from injury after close to 4 months. His form before the injury was also not exceptional. On the other hand, Ishan Kishan was the Man of the Series in the recently concluded West Indies ODI tour. His knock of 81 against Pakistan during the Asia Cup at a crucial time cannot be overlooked. Ishan has 4 consecutive half-centuries, and his form is brilliant. Former top-order batter Gautam Gambhir also opined Ishan Kishan as the first-choice keeper. According to him,
“When you are preparing to win a World Cup, you don’t look at a name; you look at the form of a player that could win you the trophy.”
“Ishan has done everything possible to become the frontrunner. We are only making this argument because he hasn’t played as many international matches as Rahul. There have been many players who have lost their spot in the team due to injuries because their replacement player performed impressively. Few had to wait for their chances, while others did not even get another chance. This is the reality. Yes, Rahul is a proven player at No. 5, but for Ishan, who has never batted at that position come in and score 82 against a bowling attack like Pakistan under that pressure, then you cannot compare the two at all.”
The All-Rounders
Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Shardul Thakur are the all-rounders in the squad. Axar Patel may not be in the first-choice playing XI.
The Bowling Department
Team India’s bowling will heavily rely on the pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami. Kuldeep Yadav, the left-arm wrist spinner, also made it to the squad.
Notable Names Missing
Sanju Samson, the aggressive wicketkeeper batter, has not been named in the squad. Team India also does not have an off-spinner in the squad. The best in the business, Ravichandran Ashwin, has been left out, even though the tournament has been played in Indian conditions. Tilak Varma and Prasidh Krishna, who were in the Asia Cup squads, also missed out.
